Old Standard is a serif typeface that recreates a particular kind of Modern (classicist) style, which was widely used in numerous publications from the second half of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. However, it gradually fell out of use in later years. Despite this, Old Standard retains at least two significant advantages.
First, it is an excellent choice for typesetting scientific papers, especially in the fields of social and humanitarian sciences, as its distinct characteristics evoke the appearance of old books traditionally used for study. Second, the best examples of Greek and Cyrillic typefaces have historically been designed within the classicist style, making Modern fonts like Old Standard more suitable for these scripts than contemporary designs, such as those based on Times New Roman.
The name “Old Standard” was chosen to differentiate it from “Obyknovennaya Novaya” (“New Standard”), a typeface associated with Soviet typography that represents a slightly different branch of the Modern style.
