Garamond is a group of many serif typefaces named in honor of the sixteenth-century Parisian engraver Claude Garamond, whose name was generally spelled as “Garamont” during his lifetime. Garamond-style fonts are widely used, most commonly for printing books and text.
Garamond’s types were modeled on the type cut for the Venetian printer Aldus Manutius by his punch cutter Francesco Griffo in 1495. They belong to what is now known as the old-style serif letter design—letters with a fairly naturalistic, handwritten appearance, but with a slightly more rigid and upright structure.
